JAMES DWIGHT7 MAXFIELD (James6, Eliphalet5-4-3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Mount Vernon, Kennebec County, Maine, on 17 February 1838 (NMGR 8:20), a child of James Quimby Maxfield and his third wife Elvira Foster.

James D. Maxfield married SYLVIA STEPHENS ELLIS at Guilford, Maine, on 16 April 1859 (NMGR 8:20). Sylvia was born at Maine on 11 September 1840 (NMGR 8:20), a child of Stephen Ellis and Almeda Robinson.

James D. Maxfield fought in the Civil War (Civ W Sold).

The 1880 Census (485:519D) reported the family in the Town of Dexter, Maine, consisting of J. Dwight Maxfield, 41, miller, wife Sylvia S., 39, daughters Lillian M., 19 and Mattie E., 18, and son A. Ralph, 15.

James D. Maxfield died on 14 September 1884 (NMGR 8:20).

Widow Lillian Maxfield was reported in the 1900 Census (597:2:67A) in the Town of Dexter, living with her son-in-law and daughter, Samuel E. and Lillian M. Small. Samuel, born at Maine in January, 1859, operated a grist mill; Lillian, born at Maine in August 1860, had three children, all living. They had been married 20 years. Widow Sylvia Maxfield, born at Maine in September 1840, had three children, two of whom were living. Her occupation was listed as "capitalist."

Sylvia Maxfield was still living at the time of the 1930 census (837:), which reported her living at 248 Lower Main Street, Dexter, Penobscot County, Maine. An 89 year old widow, she had married at the age of 18. With her was her granddaughter, Alice M. Maxfield, 40, single, housekeeper for a private family.

James D. and Sylvia Maxfield had the following children:
