GILBERT BELDEN8 MAXFIELD (Pascal7, William6-5, David4, probably Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Vergennes, Vermont on 13 March 1836 (IL D), a child of Pascal and Phidelia Maxfield.

Gilbert B. Maxfield married CAROLINE ELIZABETH LANGAN about 1857/8 (census records). Caroline was born at England on 11 December 1839 (Cook Co D), child of Josiah Langan and Esther Newton, and came to America in 1857 (1910 census).

The 1860 census reported Gilbert's young family at Fairfax, Vermont, immediately after Gilbert's step-mother Mercy Maxfield (1321:182). Gilbert, age 24, was a harness maker, wife Elizabeth was 20, son Byron L. was nine months old.

Gilbert and family soon moved to Wisconsin, where Hellen was born about 1861/2. The next three children were born in Illinois from 1864 to 1868. The 1870 census (1718:1:225B) found this family at Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin:

The next children in this family were born at Wisconsin in 1871 and 1878. The 1880 census (1429:161A:17-22) reported this family on Silver Street, Mineral Point, consisting of Gilbert, 44, laborer, Caroline, 40, wife, and children Caroline, 16, Edith 13, George, 9, and Herman, 2. Son Byron was reported (1429:151C) at Mineral Point, a farm hand on another farm.

The Gilbert and Caroline Maxfield family appeared in Chicago, Illinois, in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. The 1900 report (283:3B) found at 337 Sixty-second Street, Chicago, Gilbert B. Maxfield, born at Vermont on March 1836, wife Caroline E., born at England on December 1839, son George F., born at Wisconsin on January 1871, and son Herman E., born at Wisconsin on July 1878.

The 1910 census (277:3B) reported the following at 238 Englewood Avenue, Chicago:

According to this record, Gilbert and Caroline had been married for 52 years; Caroline had twelve children, seven of whom were living; and she immigrated in 1857.

Elizabeth Caroline Maxfield died at Chicago on 9 December 1910 (Cook Co D) Gilbert B. Maxfield died at Chicago on 21 September 1919 (IL D).

Gilbert B. and Caroline Elizabeth Maxfield had the following children, in addition to four others who died young:
