Lorenzo evidently found his way to Indiana. Before the 1870 Census, he had married SARAH ANN GRAY, who was born at Indiana on 19 October 1849 (Oak Hill Cem). The young family was reported in the 1870 Census (349:100B) at Jackson Township (Mansfield Post Office), Parke County, Indiana:

Lorenzo remained a blacksmith throughout all records. Lorenzo and Sarah had a child born at Indiana in 1871, a child born at Putnam County, Indiana, in 1876, and a child born at Kansas in 1880. The 1880 Census (394:141A) gave evidence of their move to Richland, Republic County, Kansas:

The record stated that Arthur had been born in February of that year. Sarah Ann (Gray) Maxfield died on 8 November 1899 (Oak Hill Cem). The 1900 Census (473:24A) reported a single parent household at Empire City, Cherokee County, Kansas:

Son Oliver had been married three years and was at his own home in Empire City.
Lorenzo L. Maxfield married, as his second wife, EMILY (KAST) IRELAN at Crawford County, Kansas, on 4 January 1909 (KS M) Emily was born at Illinois on 14 June 1855 (MO D). The 1900 Census (867:1B-2A) had reported Emily Irelan at Twin Groves, Jasper County, Missouri, managing her farm and the seven of her eleven children who remained at home: Ida (born January 1880), Clarence (born August 1881), Dollie (born November 1883), Claude A. (born April 1886), Minnie (born February 1890), Carrie A. (born March 1892) and Warren J. (born October 1895). Two years before Lorenzo and Emily married, Lorenzo's daughter Clara and Emily's son Claud had married. Three months after their marriage, Emily's daughter Carrie married Lorenzo's son, Oliver. The 1910 Census (792:1A) reported a very blended family at Twin Groves, Jasper County, Missouri:

This census record also reported that Lorenzo and Emily had been married one year, as had Oliver and Carrie. Emily had twelve children, eleven of whom were living. Carrie had no children. Lorenzo's son Arthur and daughter Clara had gotten married in the intervening decade. Lorenzo's second marriage and move to Emily's farm in Missouri led to his new occupation, for the first time reported as a farmer.
Emily (Kast) (Irelan) Maxfield died at Mineral Township, Jasper County, Missouri, on 13 Manuary 1913 (MO D). Lorenzo Maxfield married as his third wife, at Joplin, Missouri, on 10 May 1915 MARGARET J. (HEON) McCORMICK (MO M). Margaret was born at Arkansas on 12 February 1854 (MO D), a child of Shelton Heon and Polly N. Dill. The 1920 Census (921:12A) reported an "empty nest" couple at 605 North Joplin Street, Joplin, Missouri. Lorenzo, called "Alonzo" in this census, age 65, was now a manufacturer of buttermilk. His wife Margaret, 65, was born at Arkansas. Margaret died at Joplin on 24 January 1924 from peretonitis (MO D).
Widower Lorenzo L. Maxfield was back at Twin Groves Township, Jasper County, at the 1930 Census (1206:5A), living with his daughter and his son-in-law who was also his step-son, Claud and Clara Ireland, and their four children. Lorenzo L. Maxfield died at Joplin, Missouri, on 14 July 1932 (MO D), from a cerebral hemorrhage.
