The 1910 census (847:10A) reported this family at 614 Eleventh Street, Aurora, Hamilton County, Nebraska. The family consisted of Fred W., 44, Sarah, 33, Charles, 16, Dora, 15, Gladys, 13, Ernest, 10, Vernie, 8, and Milford, 3. Fred was described as a laborer doing odd jobs, Sarah doing housework "house to house," and Charles a farm laborer on his own farm.
The 1920 census (167:2B) reported the family at Fisher Township, Logan County, Colorado, where Frederick was engaged in farming. The family consisted of Fred, 54, Sarah, 43, Ernest, 19, Vernie, 17, Milford, 12, and Evart, 7. Ernest and Vernie were described as farm laborers on the home farm. Evart was born at Colorado.
The census of April, 1930 (244:1B) found the family 1t 639 Cleveland Street, Loveland, Colorado. Fred, 66, was a janitor for a church; Sarah was 54. Two sons remained at home as farm laborers, Milford, and Evert.
Fred Maxfield died the following month, accidentally, at Burns, Laramie County, Colorado. The report of the accident, and obituary, appeared in a paper as follows (Maralyn Maxfield):
Fred's widow Sarah died on 6 October 1939 (Maralyn Maxfield).MAN CHASING HAT FALLS OFF HIGH CLIFF AND DIES Loveland, Col., May 6 - Fred Maxfield, 65 years old, of this city, a former cowboy in Wyoming, died Monday in a Burns, Wyo., hospital from injuries suffered when he fell from a cliff while recovering his hat in a windstorm, according to word received here.
Loveland Resident was visiting brother in Wyoming.
Maxfield was visiting his brother, Dain, in Pine Bluffs, Wyo., when the accident occurred. The two had walked to the top of a bluff to see an old landmark they had placed there nearly half a century ago. A strong gust of wind blew Maxfield's hat from his head. While pursuing it, he stumbled and fell over the cliff, falling on jagged rocks at the bottom of a 150-foot drop. The man suffered severe injuries to his head and was hurt internally. His brother rushed to the bottom of the precipice and brought Maxfield to a hospital, where he died a short time later.
The veteran cowboy had been a resident here for eight years. His widow, a daughter and five sons survive. Funeral services will be held at Loveland, Wednesday.
Last Rites Held for F. W. Maxfield Fred William Maxfield was born in Shawano County, Wisconsin, 1863 and died May 6 at Burns, Wyo. He was married to Sarah Dale at Aurora, Neb., July 24th, 1892. Of this union were born seven children; of these six are living, one daughter, Mrs Gladys James, having passed away ten years ago. The others are Charles, Dora, Ernest, Vernon, Milford and Everett. Among those who are left to mourn him are three brothers, Daine Maxfield, Pine Bluff, Wyo., Levi Maxfield, Orfino, Idaho, and Moses Maxfield, Jerome, Idaho; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Daisy Maxfield, and son-in-law Harrison Van Pelt. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Baptist church. Among those who attended the funeral were Mr. Daine Maxfield and family, Mr. Clyde Maxfield and family, Wes Anderson and family, all of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Mr and Mrs Charles Maxfield of Chicago, Mr. Charles Walters and family of Sterlin, Mr. Courtwright and son, Clay of Greeley; Mrs. Arthur and daughter, Mrs. Dick Raymond of Denver, Miss Alice Deeds, Kimball, Nebr., Mrs. Laurel Thomas, Boulder, Mr. and Mrs. Art Wilson of Fort Lupton, Mr. and Mrs. Drank Dyer, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Raymond, all of Longmount.
