Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Sixth Generation

GILBERT BELCHER6 MAXFIELD (William5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Fairfax, Franklin County, Vermont, on 12 July 1785 a child of William Maxfield and his wife Abigail Belcher. He died at Mount Vernon, Knox County, Ohio, on 8 October 1832.[1] He married at Fairfax on 17 May 1810 AMELIA GRAVES.[2] Ameila was born at Georgia, Franklin County, on 22 September 1790, a child of Luman Graves and his wife Abigail Todd; she died at Mount Vernon on 18 April 1840.[3] Amelia married second at Knox County on 12 August 1834, OLIVER LORD.[4]

Gilbert grew up in northwestern Vermont, the second of ten children. and the first to survive to adulthood. Two months after marriage they appeared in the 1810 Census at Middle Hero, then part of Franklin County, as one male and one female between the ages of 16 and 25.[5] Gilbert became a physician and moved to Fredericktown, Knox County, in 1813.[6] It was reported in a paper, on 14 August 1914, "Dr. G. B. Maxfield informs the citizens that he has opened an office in Fredericktown for the practice of his profession, and that he has taken board at the house of John Kerr."[7] In 1818 he moved to Mount Vernon.[8]

The 1820 Census reported Dr. G. B. Maxfield at Wayne, Knox County, with a household consisting of 2 men between 26 and 45, a woman between 16 and 26, and three girls under ten.[9] Perhaps Amelia's age was underestimated. The other man is not identified, and son Lyman, age 9, is not indicated.

The 1830 census reported the family at Mount Vernon as follows:[10]

age male female
40-49 1 0
30-39 0 1
20-29 1 0
15-19 1 2
10-14 0 1
5-9 0 1
0-4 1 0

If Lyman's age was overestimated, and Mary's age underestimated, this record corresponds to the composition of the family as we have it from other records.

Gilbert was elected to the Mount Vernon City Council in 1831.[11] He died the following year from cholera, at the age of 47. Niece Julia (Maxfield) Lamb shared her recollection of the story in this way:

I remember well the time he was called to the bedside of a man suffering from real Asiatic Cholera, there he contracted the disease which for years he dreaded. I often heard him say if the Cholera should come to this country he knew he would die with it which proved true. This was the first case he treated. The patient lived 7 miles out in the country, he lost his way in the woods, and was caught in a drenching rain. He was so fatigued when he arrived there [which] helped to bring on the terrible malady. In a few hours he came home, opened the door. Falling on the floor he said in suppressed tones 'I got the Cholera,' and about 15 hours of terrible suffering he succumbed to the demand of insatiable death leaving his loving Mother and a large circle of near relatives.[12]
His mother had died at his home two years before, but his wife was still living. Widow Amelia (Graves) Maxfield was left with children at home ages 21, 19, 15, 14, 2, and 8 months.

Amelia remarried almost two years later. Five and a half years later she died, at the age of 49. She left unmarried children ages 23, 21 (married later that year), 10 and 8.
