JOHN HARRISON6 MAXFIELD (Henry5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont, on 19 March 1816, a child of Henry and Minerva Maxfield. He died at Fletcher, Franklin County, on 19 January 1889.[1] He married MARY WOOD STEARNS, who was born at Corinth, Orange County, Vermont, on 21 July 1815, a child of Peter Stearns, and died at Fairfax, Franklin County, on 13 January 1909.[2]

John grew up in Georgia, the seventh of eleven children. John H. Maxfield was called a farmer and currier in the 1850 census. Other censuses and birth records of children call him farmer or tanner.

The 1850 census reported this family in Westford consisting of John, 32, farmer and currier, Mary 31, and Edward, 4, in school, all born at Vermont.[3]

The 1860 census reported tha family at Fairfax consisting of John H., 43, farmer, Mary W., 41, Edward, 14, in school, and Edna, 9, in school.[4]

John H. Maxfield served in the Army in the Civil War for over a year, and received a disability discharge. He enlisted on 7 September 1861 in Company K of the 5th Vermont Infantry Regiment, and was discharged on 31 October 1862.[5] His regiment was part of the Army of the Potomac, involved in several battles, including Antietam on 17 September 1862.

This family was living at Fletcher at the time of the 1870 Census:[6]

Son Edward, 23, was a farm laborer in this census, in the household of Franklin and Lucie Hunt at Fairfax.[7] Daughter Edna, 18, was a servant in the home of Stillman and Cordelia Pierce of Fairfax.[8]

The 1880 census reported the family at Fairfax as follows:[9]

Nellie was Edna's daughter. In 1880 daughter Eva Maxfield was a servant in the household of Lewis Story of Fairfax.[10]

The Morrisville, Lamoille County, Vermont, News and Citizen reported on 20 December 1888:[11]

John Maxfield fell and broke his hip a few weeks ago, and in such a way that it cannot be cured. He suffers much in consequence. His wife, whose eye was injured by a splinter in September, has lost the sight of it entirely, but has nearly recovered from the effects of consequent pain and weakness caused by the inflammation.

John H. Maxfield died a month later with chronic diarrhea.[12]

The 1900 Census reported widow Mary (Stearns) Maxfield, 79, living with her daughter Edna (Maxfield) Corigan and son-in-law Robert Corgian, at Fairfax. According to this record Mary had five children four of whom were living; Edna had no children.[13] Perhaps Mary was counting Edna's illegitimate child as hers. Son Edward, who had become a widow in 1899, farmed at Fairfax and had two sons with him.[14] Son John B. Maxfield, also a farmer at Fairfax, lived with his wife and five children.[15] Daughter Eva, who had married her first cousin in 1883, died in 1892, at the age of 28, from cancer of the stomach.[16]

Mary (Stearns) Maxfield died at the age of 88 from senile debility.[17]
