Descendants of John Maxfield
of Salisbury, Massachusetts
Seventh Generation

SAMUEL7 MAXFIELD (Nathan6, probably Eliphalet5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at North Hero, Grand Isle County, Vermont (Hollister), on June 1833 (1900 Census), a child of Nathan Maxfield and his wife Lucinda Knowlton.

Samuel Maxfield married MARTHA M. CRANDALL on 3 April 1859 (Crandall). Martha was born at Pierrepont, Saint Lawrence County, New York, on 23 July 1829 (Crandall). The 1860 Census (852:484) reported this family at Pierrepont, consisting of Samuel, 27, farmer, Martha M., 30, and Charles C., two months.

Samuel Maxfield fought in the Civil War, from 19 December 1863 to 26 August 1865 (Civ W Sol). His record of service follows:

Name: Samuel Maxfield ,
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 10 Dec. 1863 at the age of 31
Enlisted in Company C, 14th Heavy Artillery Regiment New York on 29 Dec. 1863.
Mustered out Company C, 14th Heavy Artillery Regiment New York on 26 Aug. 1865 in Washington, DC
According to family tradition he was present at Lee's surrender.

The 1870 Census (1099:98A) reported Samuel Maxfield the head of a household at Potsdam, Saint Lawrence County, New York, which household included his sister Susan and his brother Elijah:

Name Age Sex Race Occupation R.E. P.E. Birth Other
Maxfield, Samuel 37 M W common laborer $800 $350 VT
Maxfield, Martha 30 F W keeping house NY
Maxfield, Charles 10 M W attending school NY school
Maxfield, Sigel 8 M W NY school

Olmstead, Melanatha 23 M W works in door factory NY
Olmstead, Susan 25 F W milliner NY
Olmstead, Ernest 1 M W NY
Anstead, George 21 M W works in door factory NY

The census taker evidently underestimated Martha's age by ten years. Banks and Butler were twins.

The 1880 Census (927:282A) reported this family at Potsdam again:

For the Maxfield children, the census taker has inverted the birth places of father and mother. Ida Kopf is the right age to be the daughter of Montravilla Maxfield, Samuel's brother. According to the 1900 census the Kopfs named a son Montravilla. John Kopf had found another occupation by then.

Martha (Crandall) Maxfield died at Potsdam on 19 December 1893 (Bayside Cem, VR NY).

Within a year of Martha's death, Samuel remarried. His new wife was HARRIET ROWENA ________. ("Rowena" on the 1900 census, "Harriet R." on Samuel's will). She was born at New York about January 1833 (1900 Census). The 1900 Census (1158:18A) reported Samuel Maxfield (b. VT Jun 1833) at 86 Market Street, Potsdam, with his wife of six years Rowana (b. NY Jan 1833), his widowed son, Sigle, a hardware dealer, and Sigle's three daughters, Grace, Caroline, and Nellie.

Samuel Maxfield died at Potsdam on 21 January 1905 (VR NY; Bayside Cem). He wrote a will on 29 January 1903 (St Law Sur, Wills 37:47-48), which was proved on 25 February 1905, and appears below.

Harriet Maxfield appeared in the 1910 Census (1074:13A) at Potsdam, in the household of Isaac Roberts, farmer, his wife Clara, and three children. Harriet, age 77, widow, is mother-in-law.
