Samuel Maxfield fought in the Civil War, from 19 December 1863 to 26 August 1865 (Civ W Sol). His record of service follows:

For the Maxfield children, the census taker has inverted the birth places of father and mother. Ida Kopf is the right age to be the daughter of Montravilla Maxfield, Samuel's brother. According to the 1900 census the Kopfs named a son Montravilla. John Kopf had found another occupation by then.
Martha (Crandall) Maxfield died at Potsdam on 19 December 1893 (Bayside Cem, VR NY).
Within a year of Martha's death, Samuel remarried. His new wife was HARRIET ROWENA ________. ("Rowena" on the 1900 census, "Harriet R." on Samuel's will). She was born at New York about January 1833 (1900 Census). The 1900 Census (1158:18A) reported Samuel Maxfield (b. VT Jun 1833) at 86 Market Street, Potsdam, with his wife of six years Rowana (b. NY Jan 1833), his widowed son, Sigle, a hardware dealer, and Sigle's three daughters, Grace, Caroline, and Nellie.
Samuel Maxfield died at Potsdam on 21 January 1905 (VR NY; Bayside Cem). He wrote a will on 29 January 1903 (St Law Sur, Wills 37:47-48), which was proved on 25 February 1905, and appears below.
Harriet Maxfield appeared in the 1910 Census (1074:13A) at Potsdam, in the household of Isaac Roberts, farmer, his wife Clara, and three children. Harriet, age 77, widow, is mother-in-law.
