ADOLPHUS F.8 MAXFIELD (William7, James6, William5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at DeKalb County, Illinois, on 25 July 1848 (1900 census; Green), a child of William Wallace Maxfield and his wife Elizabeth Putnam.

Adolphus Maxfield married ELIZA ELLEN HOUSTON at Knox County, Ohio, on 1 October 1867 (OH M). Eliza was born at Mount Vernon, Konx County, Ohio on 23 August 1887 (TX D), a child of John Houston and Rebecca McCumsey. Their first child was born at Wisconsin in 1868. At the time of the 1870 Census, and the births of their next three children, 1871, 1873 and 1876, they were in Indiana. The 1870 Census (353:197A) found this family at Fillmore Township, Putnam County, Indiana, consisting of A. F. Maxfield, 20, waggon maker, Eliza, 22, and William, 1.

By 1880 they had settled at Prairie Gregg, Vermillion Parish, Louisiana, where the census (473:27C) reported them:

Adolph and Eliza had been married 34 years; Eliza had five children, four living.

Adolphus Maxfield died on 30 November 1904 (Green). Eliza was reported living with her son Harry in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. She died at the home of her daughter, at Port Arthur, Texas, on 22 October 1928, from chronic bright's disease (TX D; P Arthur News, 22 Oct 1928, p. 1). She was a member of the Methodist Church of Abbeville, Louisiana.

Adolphus F. Maxfield and his wife Eliza Ellen Houston had the following children, and one other who died young:
