LEON MONTRAIL8 MAXFIELD (Montravilla7, Nathan6, probably Eliphalet5, David4, Eliphalet3, Nathaniel2, John1) was born at Canton, Saint Lawrence County, New York, on 26 May 1863 (1900 Census; IL D), a child of Montravilla and Miranda Maxfield. When Leon was six months old his father enlisted in the Army to fight in the Civil War. When Leon was ten months old his father died of smallpox at a military hospital at Washington, D.C. Leon, the youngest of five children, was raised by his widowed mother until she remarried, when Leon was about twelve years old. On 8 December 1875 Leon's step-father, Parker Ames, was made his legal guardian (St Lawr Sur, Letters of Guardianship 3:365).

Leon Maxfield married EUNICE ELVIRA BRADLEY about 1883/4. She was born at New York on March 1862 (1900 Census). The 1900 Census (1158:11A) reported their family at the Towen of Stockholm, Saint Lawrence County, New York:

The record also indicated that Leon and Eunice had been married sixteen years, and Eunice had given birth to three children, all still living.

By the time of the 1910 census, Thoda had died, Alton had married and was living on his own, and Carroll had moved to Illinois where he was living with his aunt Effie (Maxfield) Parks. Leon Maxfield and his son Ray C. Maxfield had, in the 1910 Census (1074:1A), moved into the village of Potsdam and lived at 21 Main Street. Leon, age 46, widower, was proprietor of a livery. His son was 12. Living with them were Gleda Farmer, a 62 year old widow who was housekeeper for a boarding house, and her daughter Mattie M. Farmer, 33, who was a teacher at a public school.

By 1918, when son Ray signed up for the draft, Leon Maxfield was livng at 242 Locust Place, Aurora, Kane County, Illinois. The 1920 census reported Leon Maxfield in the household of his son Carroll at 242 Grant Place, Aurora, Illinois, along with other members of the extended family. Leon, age 55, widower, worked as a ticket taker at a theater. Leon Maxfield died at Aurora on 3 May 1928 (IL D),
